Welcome!

Welcome to our website on butterflies in Europe, with information on more than 400 butterfly species from the Arctic north of Scandinavia to the hot steppes and deserts of southern Spain. Every species is illustrated with clear drawings and most of them have photographs as well. For every butterfly, there is a short description of its biology, habitat and distribution in Europe. Maps show the degree of occurrence and trend in the last 25 years.

You can compile your own species list based on regions, flight period and habitat in IdentifyIt, or search and compare the distributions of 150 European lowland species using MapIt. Finally you can test your knowledge of butterflies by means of a quiz.

This way, we hope to give an introduction to the fascinating world of butterflies.
