Habitat

Alpine grasslands

These grasslands can be found in the sub-alpine and alpine zone of the Alps, Pyrenees, Jura, Cantabrian Mountains, and northern Apennines. Isolated patches also occur locally in Central Europe, in the Black Forest, Bavarian Alps, and Harz, Ertz and Riesen Mountains, and also in the northern part of the British Isles. Many butterfly species can be found on the flower-rich meadows high in the Alps. The species that occur in this habitat type, especially at higher altitudes, are highly specialized, their life cycles adapted to the extreme conditions ( C-36).
