Coastal sand dunes and sand beaches are formed and maintained by the wind and the waves. The dunes are colonized by a vegetation of maritime grasses and other plants, and in the transition zone between bare sand and fixed dunes, many butterflies find suitable habitats. Sheltered dune valleys have a warm micro-climate and provide a suitable habitat for some specialized butterflies ( C-16).
