Raised bogs occur in cool climates with high rainfall. The vegetation depends on rain and is dominated by Sphagnum moss. The conditions are very acid and nutrient-poor. The plant material is not broken down but instead is preserved and the surface of the bog gradually rises. A few species are specialized on this habitat, such as the Large Heath, Cranberry Fritillary, and Cranberry Blue ( C-51).
