Patches of vegetation on steep screes, unstable rock piles, rubble or eroded rocks characterize this habitat. It is found on mountainous slopes in the Alps, Pyrenees, and mountains and hills of the Mediterranean region. It is an extreme habitat where only a few, mostly highly specialized species can survive, such as several Erebia species ( C-61).
