Yellow-banded Ringlet
Description:
Even before it settles, the Yellow-banded Ringlet can be recognized by the conspicuous yellowish band on the underside of the hindwing. The butterflies occur above the tree-line on steep, sunny slopes. They can often be seen taking nectar in grasslands with rather tall, flower-rich vegetation. However, when they come to lay their eggs, the females look for the shorter, grassy areas. She then settles low down in the vegetation and releases her eggs one by one onto the ground.
The caterpillars feed on Sheep's Fescue (Festuca ovina) and go into hibernation twice.
